Fence calculator · boards · posts · rails · post mix
Open the fence calculator → Type your fence length, pick the height, and it counts every board, post, rail and bag of post mix for a closeboard fence, with the total price on screen. One tap adds it all to your basket.
The quick rules, if you'd rather do it by hand
- Boards: about 6 per metre with a 16mm gap, or 7 per metre butted together
- Posts: one every 1.8m, plus one at the end
- Rails: 3 rows for a 6ft fence, 2 rows for 4ft and 5ft. Each 3.6m rail covers two bays
- Post mix: 2 bags (20kg) per post
- Gravel boards (optional): one 3.6m board per two bays
Which post length?
- 6ft (1.8m) fence: 2.4m posts
- 5ft (1.5m) fence: 2.1m posts
- 4ft (1.2m) fence: 1.8m posts
That leaves roughly 600mm in the ground. In exposed gardens, go for 4x4 posts.
Worked example: 10m of 6ft closeboard
- 61 fence boards, 1800 x 150mm (with a 16mm gap)
- 7 fence posts, 2.4m 4x4
- 9 fence rails, 3.6m
- 14 bags of post mix
- 3 gravel boards, if you want them
At our current shop prices that's roughly £33 to £37 a metre in materials. See every price on our price list.
Other calculators
Our calculators are accurate, but they work on the assumptions shown. Wood is a natural material: it can swell, shrink and flex, so it isn't an exact measurement. Check your own measurements and add a little extra if you're unsure.
