Assumes: long sides run the full length; short sides fit between them (width minus 200mm); 5mm per saw cut; posts the height of the planter; topsoil at 1.3–1.5 tonnes per m³. Fix with 150–200mm timber screws (not supplied).
Good to know: our calculators are accurate, but they work on the assumptions shown. Wood is a natural material, so it can swell, shrink, bend and vary slightly in size. Please check your own measurements before you order, and add a little extra if you're unsure.

Planter questions
How many sleepers for a planter?
Each course needs two long sides and two short ends. A 1.8 × 0.6m planter three high takes six 2.4m sleepers, each cut into a 1.8m side and a 400mm end.
Do I need corner posts?
For planters three or four high, yes. A 100 × 100 post inside each corner ties the courses together.
Should I line it?
A liner on the inside walls keeps wet soil off the timber and helps it last.
How much soil will it take?
The builder shows the volume and an estimate in tonnes, so you can order the right amount.
