Assumes: long sides run the full length; short sides fit between them (width minus 200mm); 5mm per saw cut; posts 300mm into the ground; topsoil at 1.3–1.5 tonnes per m³. Fix with 150–200mm timber screws (not supplied).

Good to know: our calculators are accurate, but they work on the assumptions shown. Wood is a natural material, so it can swell, shrink, bend and vary slightly in size. Please check your own measurements before you order, and add a little extra if you're unsure.

      Raised bed questions

How many sleepers for a raised bed?

Each course needs two long sides and two short ends. A 2.4 × 1.2m bed two high uses six 2.4m sleepers: four full lengths for the sides, and two each cut into a pair of 1m ends.

How high should a raised bed be?

One sleeper (200mm) for borders, two (400mm) for most veg, three (600mm) if you want less bending.

      Do I need corner posts?

Not usually for one or two courses on firm ground. For three high, posts inside the corners stop the sides bowing.

How much topsoil will I need?

The builder shows the volume and an estimate in tonnes. Ask us about topsoil when you order.
