Closeboard is the fence you see on most new-build estates across the North East: upright boards fixed to rails between strong posts. It's built on site to your exact length, it copes with the wind better than panels, and when a board breaks you replace one board, not a whole panel.

What goes into a closeboard fence

  • Posts: one every 1.8m, set in post mix (2 bags a post)
  • Rails: 3 rows on a 6ft fence, 2 rows on 4ft and 5ft
  • Boards: about 6 a metre with a small gap, 7 butted together
  • Gravel boards: along the bottom, so the boards stay off wet ground

Don't want to count? The fence planner does it for your length and adds everything to your basket.

Closeboard fencing cost per metre

Using our current shop prices for the materials:

  • 6ft (1.8m) closeboard: roughly £33 to £37 a metre
  • 5ft (1.5m): about £29 a metre
  • 4ft (1.2m): about £25 a metre

Add about £2 a metre for gravel boards. These are materials only. Every price is on our price list.

Closeboard or fence panels?

  • Closeboard: stronger in exposed gardens, built to your exact length, repaired a board at a time
  • Panels: quick to put up, but a blown panel means replacing the whole panel, and runs rarely finish on a whole panel

More on this: fence panels vs closeboard.

Gaps or no gaps?

A small gap between boards (we default to 16mm, one board's thickness) lets wind through and gives the timber room to swell and shrink. Butted boards give full privacy. The planner has a no-gaps option.

Closeboard questions

How long does closeboard fencing last?
Treated closeboard, with posts set properly and gravel boards keeping the boards off the soil, lasts many years. Posts are usually the first thing to go, at ground level.

Which side faces my neighbour?
Traditionally the smooth board side faces out, with posts and rails on the owner's side. If in doubt, talk to your neighbour before you build.

Do you deliver?
Yes, from the next working day, Monday to Friday, across Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North and South Tyneside and Northumberland. County Durham is collection only for supplies.

Not sure what you need?

Tell the planner how long your fence is and it lists every board, post, rail and bag of post mix. Or we can build it for you.
